If an abuser knows how to read your computer's history or cache file (automatically saved web pages and graphics), they may be able to see information which you have recently viewed on the internet. You can clear your history or empty your cache file in your browser's settings. • Internet Explorer: Pull down Tools menu, select Internet Options. On General page, under Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files. Under History click on Clear History. • AOL: Pull down Members menu, select Preferences. Click on WWW icon. Then select Advanced. Purge Cache. If an abuser has access to your email account, they may be able to read your incoming and outgoing mail. If you believe your account is secure, make sure you choose a password that an abuser will not be able to guess. This information may not completely hide your tracks. Many browser types have features that display recently visited sites. Be aware that there are spy programmes on the market which would allow your abuser to over-ride these precautions. If an abuser sends you threatening or harassing email messages, they may be printed and saved as evidence of this abuse. The messages may constitute an offence. The safest way to find information on the net would be at a local library, a friend's house, or at work. HELPLINE SUPPORT You can telephone our helpline for support or information on 01738 630965. AFTER VISITING THIS SITEAlthough it is not completely possible to eradicate your 'footsteps' whilst viewing web sites, there are ways in which you can reduce the possibility of people knowing where you have been on the Internet. The following steps will take you through the process of deleting temporary files automatically stored on your computer when you visit a site and the computer's history store, that allows you to view where someone has been that day or week. Even if this works, the fact you have done this may be noticed by whoever normally uses your computer. So if you are worried this may not be 100 per cent effective, the safest way to find information on the internet, might be at a local library, a friend's house, or at work if you feel it is less important to 'cover your tracks' on a different computer. These instructions are for Microsoft Internet Explorer. Netscape Navigator and other Browsers will have their own settings and they should allow the information to be deleted in a similar way. Click on the Tools button on the Internet Explorer tool bar.
